Zahara Children's centre

BC materials was engaged as earth consultant for the Zahara Children's centre, a hospital with residency for young tuberculosis patients, funded by the Pitt-Jolie Foundation. BC materials and the labourers team developed a 3cm thick base plaster fermented with straw for workability and strength, based on local vernacular practices. On top of this base plaster a lime-earth finishing render was applied for outside spaces, and an earth plaster for inside spaces.

A washable lime-casein-straw plaster system in 3 layers was developed for specific hospital rooms.

All earth was excavated from the site, and all sand came from a quarry on the same mountain in which the project was installed.
