Chape-ter
Chape-ter is a material research project that works to develop an earth screed using the technique of poured earth. It uses excavated earth from Brussels, plus a salt dispersant additive to limit water content. Pouring is done using a standard concrete truck and pump in attempt to create a new, more sustainable material product that uses existing construction machinery and tools.
A series of prototyping samples in sizes of 15x15cm, 1x1m and 4x5m were produced before scaling up to pilot construction sites. During the prototyping phase the exploration of different finishings such as laminated vinyl, parquet, ceramic tiles were tested both in labs and on site. The project was realised with Brussels based screed contractor EMB and the business modelling was developed with Natura Mater.
