Rammed earth

Rammed earth mix grey

  • Rammed earth mix

Rammed earth is a mix of clay, sand and gravel that is mixed & compressed within a formwork to create surfaces, walls, floors and design pieces. Available in ready to use humid big-bags. The color of the rammed earth depends on the clay. For walls and elemental pieces, the unique layers of earth are usually left exposed as a finish.

Offering floor application can be compared to a polished concrete floor: exposing the aggregate aesthetics and thermal inertia are roughly the same, and offers better humidity regulation and great acoustics.

Earth mix is poured into a solid formwork to a layer of ±16cm high, then compacted until this layer is compressed to ±9cm high. This principle is repeated until the desired wall height is reached. The rules of the art must be respected.

Under normal conditions (+20°C and 60% relative humidity), the earth wall dries about 10cm of wall thickness per week. Kastar may be dried at an accelerated rate using a construction dryer.

(Pneumatic) rammer, 40kN/m2 formwork and its tools, spade, rake, pressure or back sprayer.

Rammed earth mixes are available in 2 different quantities; 500kg mini bigbags & 1000kg bigbags.

  • As rammed earth is an unfired material and only uses natural clay as a binder, it is 100% circular. After initial use, it can be crushed, wet and reused again and again.
